The New England Society for Vascular Surgery is passionate about ensuring care for all vascular patients. The projected workforce shortage is a key threat to that. The NESVS is also passionate about cultivating a diverse workforce of vascular surgeons, to match the diversity of the population we serve. This includes surgeons who have experienced financial hardship, as many of our patients have.
Every year, many qualified students throughout New England apply for a finite number of positions in an integrated vascular residency. As of the current match cycle (2024-25), roughly 40% of programs have reverted to in-person interviews, requiring students to travel. While there are many benefits to in-person interviews, the problem it causes is cost. This can create an inequity amongst applicants, where some students cannot afford to attend as many interviews as others can.
NESVS is excited to offer the opportunity of a new $1,500 Travel Scholarship to two medical students, who attend medical school at an accredited MD/DO school in New England and who are applying to integrated vascular residency programs this cycle. Students must also be Candidate Members in NESVS or apply to be, concurrent with this scholarship application.
Students can apply for this award by submitting a copy of their personal statement and curriculum vitae (can be the same ones used on ERAS application) and answers to two brief (<250 words each) questions:
- A statement of their financial situation that would justify the need for this award
- A statement of why you believe that your experience with financial hardship could position you well to contribute to the care of vascular surgery patients.
The NESVS Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee will review applications and select the recipients. The scholarship will be awarded in mid-March of 2025. We ask that recipients follow up with us to provide feedback including where they matched, how the award was beneficial, and any ways to improve the program.
Deadline for Submission: Monday, February 17, 2025 at 5pm eastern standard time
